SUMMARY: The peer coach helps and guides students in the NSF LSAMP Scholar program via one-on-one meetings, authentic, personal connections, and group meetings with Scholars and other coaches. Peer coaches also assist in the annual Fall La Familia event, as well as with other events put on by the NSF LSAMP Alliance group.

JOB DETAILS: Approximately 10hrs. per week, Monday through Friday, during the academic year, hours may fluctuate to accommodate program activities. Pay is $12.00/hour; Interested applicants should reach out Dr. Melissa Karlin, mkarlin@stmarytx.edu for further review.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meets with assigned students regularly and creates/maintains a schedule for peer-to-peer meetings. 
  • Maintains accurate and timely notes of peer-to-peer meetings.
  • Attends and assists with facilitation and implementation of required events/meetings to include La Familia Orientation, various NSF LSAMP event, and weekly staff meetings.
  • Attends and participates in any/all training sessions as directed
  • Hosts workshops, group events, and office hours for assigned students
  • Develops understanding and knowledge of college services, support, and resources; may make appropriate student referrals to college offices, departments or professionals, as needed.
  • Meets regularly with department leadership
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be currently enrolled as a full time, undergraduate, Junior/Senior level STEM major for the 2025-2026 academic year, and be in good academic and conduct standing
  • Must have ability to commit to work minimum of 10hrs per week for academic year and meet all listed time commitments.
  • Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Zoom or similar platforms); ability to use statistical programs, and willing to learn and use additional programs.
  • Must have respect for the and maintain the strict confidential nature of the position to include materials and student information.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are necessary in person, writing and by phone; Strong and collegial interpersonal skills and ability to Actively participate in all training, staff meetings, and programs
  • Ability to analyze/solve problems and exercise judgment in resolving or referring special or non-routine situations. Skills in short- and long-term planning.
  • Strong organizational, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and detail oriented. 
  • Excellent customer service skills with ability to provide service to the university community; Professional demeanor, appearance and strong work ethic. 
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, meet timelines, organize information, attend to details, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced office
  • Strong desire to develop high-quality, personal relationships with other STEM students and connect them with resources at their university and across the NSF Alliance
  • Must have ability to ability to work effectively with communities across the university; be committed to diversity, inclusion and positive social change.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business.
  • While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
