SUMMARY: St. Mary’s University’s Graduate Peer Coaches partner with post-baccalaureate students to equip, encourage, and ensure academic success. They help students develop action plans to meet identified goals and strategies to improve their academic performance. Peer coaches play a critical role in building students’ motivation and self-confidence, providing them with tools to tackle the rigors of academic and personal activities. Graduate Peer Coaches are held to the same standard as any St. Mary’s University employee. JOB DETAILS: Hybrid (online and in-person). Average of 20 hours per week, flexible hours; Fall and Spring semester with possibility of summer. The position pays hourly at $15.00-$17.00. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct individualized coaching sessions to assist students with time management, goal setting, organization, and other academic skills.
- Help students develop action plans to meet their academic goals.
- Provide guidance on study habits, motivation, academic planning, and learning styles.
- Plan and facilitate workshops on topics such as time management, effective study techniques, and goal setting.
- Makes appropriate student referrals to college resources, departments or professionals, when necessary.
- Lead group study sessions to foster a collaborative learning environment.
- Promote coaching services and workshops through various communication channels.
- Engage with students to encourage utilization of academic coaching services.
- Maintain records of coaching sessions and track student progress.
- Provide feedback and reports on student needs and program effectiveness.
- Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities.
- Stay informed about best practices in academic coaching and student support.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of all student information, material, and discussions shared in the academic peer coach relationship.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Attend trainings and workshops.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Earned baccalaureate degree and enrolled as a post-baccalaureate student at St. Mary’s University.
- Experience with data collection and analysis preferred. Experience in event management is preferable.
- Must be a second-year post-baccalaureate student in good academic standing, maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA, and good student conduct standing.
- Must be willing and able to work flexible hours — after normal business hours, some evenings and weekends as needed for events.
- Must be conscientious, prompt and have respect for the private and confidential nature of the office.
- Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and be willing to learn and use additional programs.
- Knowledge of telephone etiquette and general office equipment.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are necessary. Excellent customer service skills including flexibility. Comfortable working with diverse populations.
- Strong organizational, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and detail oriented. Ability to multi-task and work both independently and collaboratively.
- Professional demeanor, appearance, and strong work ethic.
- Must have excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Ability to take initiative, work independently, meet timelines, organize information, and attend to details.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business.
- While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner.
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
