SUMMARY: Academic Peer Coaches are a crucial part of the retention team at St Mary’s University. As a learning mentor it is important that you maintain contact with the Director if there are concerns when meeting with a student. It is especially important to contact the director if there are mental health concerns. Academic Peer Coaches do not tutor but can guide students in review of course content to make appropriate suggestions and create appointments for the student to meet with a tutor if needed. Coaches will communicate with students through their StMU email address and enter notes into the Rattler Navigate system.
JOB DETAILS: Position begins October 1, 2024 and ends May 9, 2025. Approximately 10 hrs. per week, Monday through Friday, hours may fluctuate to accommodate special events and projects. - Identify strategies for students to increase academic performance
- Assist campus departments with developing and presenting workshops

- Financial Aid
- Support social media posting by providing content for posts on strategies
- Support video library content with how to videos tips
- Contact students who need support due to low performance concerns in Early Alert campaigns
- Report student concerns as needed to Director
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a 3.5 GPA or higher
- Student in any major can apply; however, there is currently a higher need for GSB and SET students
- Must have a completed Faculty Recommendation Form (https://forms.office.com/r/QkKxe9Qr44)
- Ability to work with minimal supervision essential
- Be classified by St. Mary’s University as a Texas resident
- Be registered with Selective Service, or be exempt
- Be enrolled at least half-time in a plan leading to a degree or certification
- Not be a recipient of an athletic scholarship (i.e., obligated to play an intercollegiate sport as a condition of receiving the scholarship) during any semester TCWS is awarded)
- Not be enrolled in a seminary or other program leading to ordination or licensure to preach for a religious sect or to be a member of a religious order
- Must be in good academic and student conduct standing.
- Must demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality.
- Must be committed to working collaboratively with a diverse and dynamic community.
- Must be conscientious, prompt and have respect for the confidential nature of the office.
- Strong organizational, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are necessary; ability to keep detailed records and summarize research.
- Excellent customer service skills with ability to interact effectively in person, in writing and by phone with university faculty, staff and students; Professional demeanor, appearance and strong work ethic.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business.
- While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
