JAPA Summer Camp Directors – Theater/Choreographer/Music
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s Junior Academy of Performing Arts (JAPA) is seeking Summer Youth Arts Instructors, who specialize in Theater, Music or Choreography to lead 6-weeks of musical theater summer camp for students ages 8 to 12. JAPA introduces musical theater to students who have a talent and curiosity for the performing arts and strengthens the knowledge and skill level of students already interested in pursuing theater as a profession. The instructors will work collaboratively to teach and plan curriculum in their area of discipline and to assist with the overall management of the program. The ideal candidate has a desire to work with students of all experiences, backgrounds, and talents and an interest in being part of the long-term growth of the program over future seasons. Summer camps will be held at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, University of Maryland, Monday through Friday from June 26 through August 4. The Choreographer will assist with pre-planning and production meetings prior to summer camp start date.
Instructor Duties:
– Plan and teach all music, acting and choreography for Broadway-style productions at each session
– Develop and execute engaging curriculum and lessons throughout the rehearsal process
-Collaborate with the creative team for an overall artistic interpretation of production
-Communicate with parents/guardians and M-NCPPC supervisors to ensure a safe, secure and customer friendly environment, promoting cooperation and coordinating with all personnel and participants
Qualifications:
Minimum 24-weeks of previous experience has a youth music director or as an administrator or supervisor of children’s art programs. Ideal candidate will have at least 1 year of teaching experience or professional qualifications in music education or equivalent field.
